The Miracle of Earthing: Are you sleeping grounded?
Most humans are still disconnected from the Earth's natural healing potential
So, my friends, how are you sleeping? And… most importantly… are you sleeping ‘earthed’ or ‘grounded’?
It’s surprising to me how many aren’t aware of the need to be fully grounded whilst asleep, even today, with the plethora of information on how critical earthing is for well-being.
Well, maybe that’s the trouble… there simply is too much information leading to overwhelm!
Insomnia, a modern ill?
Today, many adults struggle to fall asleep due to overstimulation from their ‘always on’ devices, as well as an overconsumption of caffeine (even taking this substance into their bodies at night!), as well as suffering from the major ill of today’s modern world - constant stress.
According to one site, 1 in 5 adults in the USA suffer from insomnia, half of US adults experience insomnia once a month or more (50%) - and on top of that, over 1 in 4 18-24 year olds experience insomnia nightly (29%), the highest rate of insomnia out of any age group in the US.
The so-called ‘news’ broadcast 24/7 today is actually very toxic, and many people just continue to absorb that distressing information without much discernment as to ‘why’ they are doing it.
Insomnia isn’t about not being able to fall asleep, it’s also reflected in the poor sleep quality many people continue to have, so that even if they get the required ‘8 hours’ of sleep, they wake up feeling totally unrefreshed… and sometimes they wake up feeling exhausted!
Our ancestors didn’t have such constant turbulence in their lives, and so insomnia really wasn’t prevalent in their time.
What you don’t know… will hurt you!
I don’t know about you, but I don’t resonate with the phrase, “what you don’t know won’t hurt you.”
Isn’t it the exact opposite?!
When we lose awareness, we often make mistakes that end up hurting us and the ones we love.
Recently, I took a flight from Cape Town to London. I arrived at Heathrow in the early hours of the morning, tired and ‘ungrounded’ after a 12 hour flight. I took a taxi to my mother’s home in London, located in a peaceful suburb with many parks and other green spaces, coffee shops and eateries…
I managed to stay awake for the whole day, catching up with mum. Then it was time to crash… an early night beckoned.
I walked up to my old bedroom on the first floor and fell into a blissfully welcome sleep. When I woke up, I still felt a bit tired but much better.
However, after 3 nights, I realised I just wasn’t sleeping as well as I normally did…
I was going to bed just before 10pm, I’d taken arnica to reset by body clock, and I was doing my usual deep yoga and meditation practices in the mornings and evenings, yet something was still ‘off’.
As I contemplated what had changed (apart from 6,000 miles), it struck me…
I was sleeping 15ft above the ground, with no grounding sheet!
Back in Cape Town, where I’ve been living for almost three years now, I have an Earthing sheet that connects me physically and energetically to the Earth’s healing potential.

Back in 2010, a friend mentioned ‘the science of Earthing’.
I was teaching an in-person energy medicine course at a lovely healing space in Kent and my friend Louise (the owner) was super excited about a new book she had come across.
I already knew that it was vital for the body to ‘ground’ to the Earth… to be connected… but at that point I’d never heard of the science behind it!
Fascinated by the little titbits my friend Louise shared, I decided to delve into this matter. She recommended I read the book “Earthing, the most important health discovery, ever?’ by Clint Ober, Dr. Stephen T. Sinatra and Martin Zucker, and so I did.
Immediately I found myself riveted by the breathtaking simplicity of this knowledge, and incredulous that more people didn’t know very much about it, if at all! That included myself!
I’m still incredulous about the lack of knowledge - and the lack of implementation - almost 14 years later… society is slow to change.
Why you need to sleep grounded — using an Earthing sheet!
It’s pretty simple really.
Throughout practically all of history, we humans have maintained a direct physical connection with the Earth - i.e. the skin of our bodies touching “the skin” of the Earth. But not today.
The majority of humans in 2023 mostly live and work completely insulated from the Earth…
Most of us sleep at least 1 foot above the floor and so we aren’t in contact with the Earth when the body is performing critical housekeeping processes during the night.
Further, when we wake up, most of us walk around disconnected from the Earth because of the shoes we wear — most have a thick layer of insulating material as the sole.
I’ve even seen many people walking with shoes on sandy beaches, instead of letting allowing the sensors on their feet to draw up nourishment from the ground, and help the body reset.
The Earth is one of the most direct healing sources of energy for our bodies, and most humans are not using it.
It might seem normal to sleep ungrounded… but that’s the problem with society. We are caught up in negative feedback loops.
When we sleep grounded, we sleep better, and we heal faster.

Learn how being ‘unearthed’ negatively affects your blood
The Earth’s surface is a massive reservoir of negatively charged free electrons. Without a constant connection to this reservoir, the cells in our body are unable to balance the positive charge which we accrue in our daily life.

The negative effect of excess positive charge in the blood can be seen very clearly by the way in which the cells are attracted to clump together on the left (Fig.1). Thicker blood causes high blood pressure and heart attacks. When the same blood is ‘grounded’ (on the right), the blood viscosity lessens. In layman’s terms, it becomes thinner and can flow more easily through the body.
If a patient is taking the commonly prescribed drug warfarin to thin their blood, for example, this will typically cause unwanted side effects over the short and long term. By simply grounding every day, the patient may be able to reduce and even eliminate the use of pharma meds since grounding thins the blood and normalises blood pressure. (NB: If you are on meds, you must continue taking them, and consult your doctor about your intention to incorporate ‘grounding’ or ‘earthing’ as part of your overall health regime).

Incredible Healing: learn how ‘earthing’ speeds up recovery time!
In terms of physical healing, earthing your body massively speeds up recovery time.

In Fig A, you will see photographic images documenting accelerated improvement of an 8-month-old, non-healing open wound suffered by an 84-year-old diabetic woman.
The top image shows the open wound and a pale-gray hue to the skin. The second image was taken after just one week of grounding or earthing treatments, and shows a marked level of healing and improvement in circulation, as indicated by the skin color. The third image was taken after 2 weeks of earthing treatment, and shows the wound healed over and the skin color looking dramatically healthier.
Treatment consisted of a daily 30-minute grounding session with an electrode patch while patient was seated comfortably. The cause of the wound adjacent to the left ankle was a poorly fitted boot. A few hours after wearing the boot, a blister formed, and then developed into a resistant open wound. The patient had undergone various treatments at a specialized wound center with no improvement. Vascular imaging of her lower extremities revealed poor circulation. When first seen, she had a mild limp and was in pain. After an initial 30 minutes of exposure to grounding, the patient reported a noticeable decrease in pain. After 1 week of daily grounding, she said her pain level was about 80% less. At that time, she showed no evidence of a limp. At the end of 2 weeks, she said she was completely pain-free.

In Fig. B, you can see a rapid recovery from a serious wound.
A cyclist was injured in Tour de France competition – chain wheel gouged his leg. (A) Grounding patches were placed above and below wound as soon as possible after injury. (B) Day 1 after injury. (C) Day 2 after injury. There was minimal redness, pain, and swelling, and cyclist was able to continue the race on the day following the injury.
