Why Awakening Can Feel Overwhelming
True awakening will often bring a sense of disorientation -- something that is overlooked by today’s trendy spiritual memes on social media.
The ego, or the mind’s identity, feels threatened by the dissolution of its control and reacts with fear — or even terror. This happens because the mind clings to familiar structures, even when they no longer serve you.
If you are worrying about losing control, not being able to ‘figure it all out’, then your mind (or ego) is still operating to some extent.
The mind becomes panicky when nothing makes sense anymore – because it’s main job is to protect itself.
Recognising this is the first step toward breaking free.
There is a place inside which is not confused, that is not scared… it is your very Being.
The Ego vs. Inner Stillness
Amid life’s chaos, there exists a part of you that remains unshaken—an inner stillness that is always accessible.
Fear and confusion signal that your attention has been re-captured by the mind. The ego, or conditioned mind, often reacts by replaying past events, rehearsing imaginary futures, or avoiding the present moment altogether. It may even drive you toward coping mechanisms like comfort eating or binge-watching Netflix to distract from uncomfortable emotions.
The way out of this mental and emotional turbulence is through fully acknowledging the present moment. When you anchor yourself in the Now, thought naturally begins to subside. What remains is your breath, your sensory awareness, and a profound sense of peace.
If you can recognise uneasy thoughts or challenging emotions as they arise, this simple awareness indicates a disconnection from the ego’s grip. In that moment, you are awakening from the collective “dream” (or nightmare) that keeps so many trapped in cycles of suffering.
Who is the “I” that is aware?
Think of this. If everything in this world was the colour “green” then “green” would not exist. Something other than “green” has to exist.

Stillness initially doesn’t seek solutions; it anchors you in the present moment, where clarity naturally arises.
Thought, of course, eventually comes back in but it’s a much higher level of awareness.
Challenging Life Situations: The Ego’s Trap
Significant life challenges—sometimes a single crisis or multiple difficulties converging at once—often serve as the catalyst for true awakening.
Events like job loss, serious illness, divorce, the death of a loved one, or financial hardship tend to heighten fear and uncertainty. The ego, in its habitual way, exacerbates these challenges with thoughts like, “My life is falling apart.”
This often leads to “catastrophizing,” where the mind immediately conjures worst-case scenarios. In such moments, it’s easy to become entangled in the mind’s relentless narrative of suffering.
But there is a way out.
