Your brain's frontal lobe is home to areas that manage thinking, emotions, personality, judgment, self-control, muscle control and movements, memory storage and more. Just as its name indicates, it's the forward-most area of your brain.
The superconscious state of awareness has its physical counterpart in the frontal lobe of the brain. Your daily or normal waking conscious state operates from the middle part of the brain; and your subconscious impulses come from the lower ‘reptilian’ brain.
Although there is a linear progression of awareness from subconsciousness toward superconsciousness, nothing is truly linear in terms of consciousness. Indeed, entering a superconscious state at will encompasses all three ‘levels’ of the mind at once!
Often, we drift into different states of consciousness throughout our day, and without much awareness.
Have you ever got out of bed, got ready for work (or the day ahead), and suddenly realised you weren’t really aware of what you were doing? Maybe you brushed your teeth, and then thought, ‘did I really just brush my teeth?’
Life seems to happens in a dreamlike sequence.
The other day whilst I out writing in a coffee shop, I witnessed a woman walking across the floor, with her cup tilted, spilling most of her coffee as she went … quite oblivious to the fact! She was caught up in her own thoughts, which happens to all of us at some time or other. Eventually, she realised that the entire contents of her cup was all over the floor and quickly went to get a cloth from the staff to mop it up.
I’m certainly not coming from my own perfection! It takes almost constant work to stay present, and not get sucked into little wormholes of thought. If we are dealing with a stressful situation, thoughts can totally eclipse the present moment.
The instinctual mind is also very powerful and can ‘take over’, for example, if we perceive a threat, real or imagined. If there’s a fire, the chattering monkey mind will suddenly drop away, and we will find ourselves running away from the hazard. That’s a good thing!
The downside of this inbuilt programming is when we get caught up in repetitive knee-jerk responses to life, lashing out at loved ones, repeating mistakes we really don’t want to make again and again, getting stuck in negative mind loops etc.
If you want to develop the ability to shift from one state of consciousness to another, the simple exercise below can help you retrain your brain-mind connection.
Remember, the normal state of thinking is largely involuntary, and useless, and we are destined to go higher. We are at an evolutionary crossroads.
Neuro-linguistic Programming (NLP)
In the 1970s, the system of Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) brought it into mainstream consciousness that we tend to make certain eye movements when searching for information in our brain.
When you think (and access information stored in your brain), you will typically move your eyes as you ‘search’’ your own databanks. This is largely done involuntarily - i.e. you don't think about the fact that your eyes are moving.
