As the Sun reaches its peak, what in your life is ready to rise, be seen, and be celebrated?

Between Solstices by György Soponyai, Astronomy Photographer of the Year 2021

Each June in the Northern Hemisphere, the Sun appears to pause — to hover at the peak of its ascent. This is the Summer Solstice, the sacred turning point of the solar year. Often called midsummer, it brings the longest day and shortest night, a moment when sunlight reigns supreme.

But here’s the subtle truth: while many speak of the solstice as a day, it’s actually a precise astronomical moment — the instant the Earth’s North Pole is tilted most directly toward the Sun.

📅 When is the Summer Solstice in 2025?

🔭 Astronomically, the solstice occurs at 03:42 BST on Saturday, 21 June 2025, when the tilt of the Earth’s axis reaches its maximum inclination toward the Sun.

♋ Astrologically, the solstice is marked by the Sun’s entry into 0° Cancer, which happens at 09:24 BST the same day — a symbolic threshold marking the beginning of Cancer season and the energetic shift toward nourishment, inner life, and emotional wisdom.

🌍 What Causes the Solstice?

  • The Earth spins on its axis once every 24 hours, giving us night and day.

  • But that axis is tilted 23.44° relative to its orbit around the Sun.

  • This tilt is what creates seasons — as Earth orbits, one hemisphere leans closer to the Sun, then away.

At the June Solstice, the Northern Hemisphere is tilted closest to the Sun. Six months later, at the December Solstice, the roles reverse — and the Southern Hemisphere basks in its midsummer Sun.

This dance between light and shadow, tilt and turn, is the very rhythm that governs our calendars, our harvests, our rituals, our internal clocks.

🪐 Solstice, Season, and Soul

The word solstice comes from the Latin solstitium, meaning “Sun stands still.”

And for a brief time, it truly does — the Sun’s apparent northward journey halts, before it begins to reverse, slowly descending once more toward the southern skies.

To ancient peoples, this was not just a calendar event — it was a portal of power.

  • At Stonehenge, the stones are aligned to catch the rising solstice Sun, a moment of reverence still celebrated today.

  • In Chichén Itzá, the great pyramid casts the illusion of a serpent as shadow meets light.

  • Across Sweden, Latvia, and the Baltic, flowers, fire, and fertility rites mark the ancient alignment.

  • And in the Southern Hemisphere, where June marks winter, this day is about inviting the Sun’s return, echoing earlier associations with midwinter festivals and even pre-Christian Christmas rites.

✨ Why the Solstice Matters More Than Ever

Even in our modern world of LED lights and 24/7 cycles, something in us remembers.

Our bodies, our dreams, our emotions are synced to celestial rhythms.

The Solstice offers a pause — a sacred invitation to ask:

What in your life is coming into fullness?

What is asking to be illuminated, honoured, or released?

In astrology, Cancer season is a time of inner turning, ruled by the Moon. It’s no coincidence that at the very peak of solar power, we begin a season that honours home, emotion, memory, and mothering. The outer Sun feeds the inner waters.

🌞 Let This Be a Moment Of Awakening

Let this be more than a date on the calendar.

Step outside at dawn or dusk.

Mark the light.

Light a candle.

Reflect.

Feel.

Give thanks.

Because the Sun does not just rise and fall in the sky.

It rises and falls within you.
